Cross Referencing

Dear,

Can any one help on the following work flow.

  • We are changing the content of a very large number of documents, creating one of the potential scenarios below:

  •          Doc A references Doc B but Doc A has been deleted.
  •          Doc A references section in Doc B, but that section has been moved or deleted from the module.

Can any one suggest a work process that will allow us to do a consistency check across all the DOC's (with potentially thousands of cross references).

Thanks in Advance.

Why would bullet two be an issue since Module A is deleted?

Why would bullet three be an issue if reference is in still in Module B?

It seems to be you haven't raised any issues.

Dear DOORSHAM,

Sincere apologies,

The question is

  •          Doc A references in Doc B but, Doc A has been deleted.
  •          Doc A references section in Doc B, but that section has been moved or deleted from the module. (I mean to ask is Doc X with certain section is mentioned in Doc Y, however section from Doc X is removed or deleted, hence how can we put an update/track on Doc Y, (since in Doc Y it would have been mentioned to refer section in Doc X)  )

Doc A isn't the syntax of DOORS.  It is easier to communicate if you use the right syntax that the vendor developed.

Term references isn't specifically defined in DOORS syntax -- so what do you mean by references.  Provide examples if you mean anything other than links.   Some time people mean links to when they are talking about references -- some people mean urls are defined -- some people mean a textual description.  How are we to know what you mean unless you tell us -- using the syntax of DOORS instead of your own self defined terms.

I would like mention here reference means Textual Description.

Say, This is one object in Doc Y:

Refer to Doc X 4.1.3 for details on engineering. Later point of time the section 4.1.3 is renamed as 4.1.2 or permanently deleted.

Will this example be of any help, can we have your contact information if it is okay to call you.

Thanks.

Usually make a Link from Object Y to an Object  R  in referenced section.  Then when Object R moves a layout dxl can show section number of Object R.  This would let a user either see if there is consistency or could write a dxl script that shows inconsistency.

Then you could create a filter to show objects that have textual reference descriptions and check for consistency in the layoutdxl. column.

Or you could write a dxl script that reports on linked info.

In the layout dxl does not show object number where there is a textual reference then user can check for consistency in same manner stated above.

Most users create a  "Reference Link"  to enable easy navigation.   Note the Reference Link could be between modules or could be an external link to physical windows files that are not in DOORS.

I am glad I could make the q? understandable. DOORSHAM, could you please guide us further on how we can best create this layout DXL. (very new to Scripting)

If you create a Reference Link Module and create the links between Object you can use the analysis wizard to do about 90 percent of the work for you.

After u get the column created for layout dxl -- you will have to   add only one line  something like:

   display number othero

If you are using external links -- that would be another layout dxl.

Would it be possible to explain the below lines:

You get as much as you can -- then you will understand the lines -- lets call it on the job training.
